Toyota Taps AI To Predict Human Decision Making

Toyota wants to figure out how to help people perform better.

A new initiative to develop artificial intelligence tools is being launched by the Toyota Research Institute (TRI).

The initiative, Machine-Assisted Cognition (MAC), is intended to create and demonstrate AI tools that can understand and predict human behavior in the context of decision-making.

“A key pillar of TRI’s charter is to explore ‘what’s next’ for Toyota, and MAC is another way TRI can apply its AI expertise to help humans perform better,” states Eric Krotkov, TRI’s chief science officer. “Our vision is to create a human amplification system for Toyota where people and machines work together synergistically to make better predictions, forecasts and business decisions, and do so more quickly.”

TRI hired Franziska Bell,  former head of platform data science at Uber, to manage the program.

Maybe the system will be able to advise Toyota on what to do with its future self-driving car ambitions.
